EASY-C Public Workshop, Dec 5th 2008, Dresden

Dresden

On December 5th, researchers and engineers from network operators, system vendors, test equipment manufacturers, hardware and software suppliers as well as from academia came together for the EASY-C public workshop in Dresden. More than 120 participants followed the invitation to get insight on the targets and the current achievements of research activities within EASY-C.

After a brief welcome Prof. Fettweis gave a presentation on the motivation and project objectives. He emphasized the importance of evaluation of field test measurements for innovative concepts, which are currently study items in the standardization for LTE-Advanced in 3GPP.

Subsequently project partners Alcatel-Lucent, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institute and TU Dresden and presented their key topics and research approaches in EASY-C:
  • Co-operative MIMO
  • Testbed Rationale
  • Interference Modelling
  • Setup and Features of the Testbeds in Dresden and Berlin.
Thereafter the partners’ presentations continued with teaser talks by representatives from Actix, Ericsson, Qualcomm and Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institute on selected research topics:
  • Antenna Type Optimizations in real SU-MIMO Network Planning Scenarios
  • Self Backhauling Approaches
  • Low Complexity-Concepts of Network Coordination
  • Synchronous Transmission
After the lunch, the workshop continued with short presentations on demonstrators and an exhibition and poster session. Several partners showed their current achievements in real hard- and software, ranging from scalable video coding via multi- user uplink joint detection and LTE-SIMO system demonstration with link adaptation to remote radio heads prototypes for LTE.

As intended, there were raised a lot of fruitful discussions among project partners and interested externals, e.g. from LSTI, which met on their own on the day before.

Thanks to all participants for their attendance and hope that they enjoyed the event. Last but not least, a big thank to all our EASY-C project partners and the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) well as to K.I.T. and Dorint Hotel Dresden, without their support this workshop would never have been possible.

The Workshop on LTE Evolution at the International Conference on Communications (ICC) in June 2009 in Dresden was also a major success, having the largest number of participants of all workshops held at the IEEE ICC'09.
